If there’s one thing I love about the Enneagram, it’s how it illuminates the motivations that drive us, especially in leadership. By understanding the deeper layers of why people act the way they do, we unlock insights that go beyond the surface and tap into the core of human behavior. Today, I want to dive into two influential leaders—Donald Trump and Kamala Harris—and explore how their distinct Enneagram types shape their leadership styles and communication approaches. Spoiler alert: their motivations couldn’t be more different!
The visual of Donald Trump was created to reflect his Enneagram Type 8 traits of dominance, strength, and control

Donald Trump: The Bold Challenger (Enneagram Type 8, Social Subtype)
Donald Trump embodies the essence of Enneagram Type 8, often called "The Challenger." He thrives on power, control, and a deep need to assert himself in any situation. If there’s a battle to be fought, Trump is ready. His leadership is unapologetically bold, and he sees himself as a protector—someone who is not afraid to take charge, break boundaries, and claim space. His Social Subtype amplifies this, as he positions himself as the one who will fight for his people, often speaking about protecting the "forgotten" or "real America."
Trump's confrontational style is unmistakable. Whether in debates, press conferences, or public appearances, he projects dominance. His quickness to challenge anyone who questions him—like when he dismisses tough questions as "hostile" or "disgraceful"—reflects a core Type 8 trait: an aversion to vulnerability. He thrives on power dynamics, and his rhetoric frequently revolves around strength, control, and winning. For Trump, leadership is about domination and protection.
The visual of Kamala Harris was created to reflect her Enneagram Type 1 traits of moral integrity, justice, and reform

Kamala Harris: The Ethical Reformer (Enneagram Type 1, Social Subtype)
In contrast, Kamala Harris exemplifies Enneagram Type 1, known as "The Reformer." She is driven by a core desire to make the world a better, more just place. Her leadership is grounded in principles, ethics, and a deep sense of responsibility for what is right. Harris often speaks about the importance of integrity and fairness, whether it’s in the realm of civil rights, criminal justice reform, or economic equality.
What makes Harris unique is her Social Subtype—she isn’t just focused on personal integrity but on societal reform. She sees the bigger picture and understands the importance of creating systems that work for everyone. Her speeches often highlight unity and progress, focusing on collective well-being and the need to bring people together. Her leadership is less about confrontation and more about moral clarity and forward-thinking reform, always with an eye on building a better future.
The Dynamic Contrast: Power vs. Principle
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. While Trump is all about power—asserting dominance, protecting his people, and avoiding vulnerability—Harris is focused on principle, striving to create systems that reflect fairness and justice. Trump’s leadership resonates with those who value strength and assertiveness, while Harris speaks to those who prioritise ethical leadership and inclusive progress.
It’s fascinating how the Enneagram reveals these deeper motivations. Trump sees challenges as something to conquer head-on, dismissing anything that might make him appear weak. Harris, on the other hand, is less concerned with appearing strong and more focused on ensuring that the right thing gets done. Her leadership is driven by an internal compass that points toward justice and reform.
Why This Matters for Us
Understanding these dynamics isn’t just about politics—it’s about seeing how our motivations shape the way we lead, connect, and make decisions. Whether you resonate more with Trump’s bold approach or Harris’s principled, reform-oriented style, there’s value in understanding what drives these leaders at their core.
The Enneagram gives us a lens to see beyond actions to the heart of what makes someone tick. And that’s where the real growth happens. When we understand our own core motivations and those of the people around us, we’re empowered to lead with greater awareness and connection.
